Before signing the Bar Roll, Richard was employed in the litigation section of a large national commercial law firm, in which capacity he was involved in a variety of practice areas, including insurance, corporate commercial, property and insolvency. While undertaking his legal studies, Richard also worked in a suburban legal practice where he was involved in a wide variety of practice areas. Richard has also held positions with various metropolitan water authorities in Victoria, and has been published in various academic and trade publications. Richard has been appointed a Senior Research Fellow with the Monash University Faculty of Law, and has been one of the supervising solicitors at the Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service.
