After signing the Bar role in 1973 Michael O'Brien has appeared in all jurisdictions in the Magistrates', County and Supreme Courts, together with the Federal Court, the Federal AAT, VCAT as well as the various Industrial Tribunals and Licensing Authorities. Michael has had extensive experience in common law cases of every description, particularly the full ambit of personal injury. He has represented both Plaintiffs and Defendants in the cases he has undertaken, whether they be industrial, TAC, medical negligence and/or slipping cases, and for many years a considerable part of his work has consisted of briefs in substantial Public Liability cases, quite often opposed to Senior Counsel. The bulk of Michael's work has consisted of running both TAC and VWA cases, including the "serious injury" applications.
Michael has practiced extensively in the WorkCover jurisdiction for many years in both the County and Magistrates' Courts.
Along with a number of Senior Counsel, Michael was one of the first members of the Bar to undertake an intensive course of instruction in mediation conducted by the Dispute Resolution Centre in November, 1993, and he has an Accreditation from the Victorian Bar as a qualified mediator. Through a combination of impartiality and thorough preparation, Michael has been able to play an effective role as a mediator. He was involved in all the mediations that took place across Australia in regard to Supreme Court actions brought by survivors of the Melbourne Voyager collision.
